Hearing Protection

Exposure to even moderately loud noise can damage your hearing over time. Unlike hereditary or other diseases which can damage your hearing, loss due to noise can easily be prevented with some form of hearing protection.

A general rule of thumb is that if you cannot hear someone within 3 feet of you, your environment is too loud and hearing protection is recommended. However, exposure to lower intensity noise for extended periods of time, such as that produced by handheld power tools and personal music players can also have an adverse affect on your hearing.

The simplest way to achieve a degree of hearing protection is to buy a cheap set of earplugs, and wear them when doing things like mowing the lawn, working with power tools or heavy machinery, or listening to or playing loud instruments.
