Hearing Loss Treatment
Hearing loss can be temporary – loss caused from
moderate noise exposure, ear infection or head injury may not persist,
although in the case of infection or injury one should consult a doctor
to treat the underlying cause.
However many types of hearing loss, including that which is caused by
long term exposure to noise, or brief exposure to extreme noise, are
permanent. Many diseases also have hearing loss as a symptom. Hearing
aids and amplifiers can increase the wearer’s ability to function
and allow near-normal hearing but the ear’s natural function cannot
be restored.
In some cases of total hearing loss, a device called a cochlear implant
can be placed in the patient’s ear. It bypasses the structure
of the ear completely and stimulates the auditory nerve directly. It
requires major surgery and its effectiveness varies by patient.
