Hearing Instruments
If you’ve recently started using a hearing instrument
to compensate for hearing loss, then you may find it disorienting and
confusing when wearing your hearing aid. Everything sounds different
and sounds such as paper rustling and street noise can be gratingly
loud. Even your own voice can sound different and hollow. You may also
feel that your ears are ‘plugged up’ and experience other
discomfort.
Your hearing instrument can greatly improve your quality of life, allowing
you to hear and react to everything around you, even though it may be
difficult at first. If you are having trouble adjusting, take it slowly.
Wear your hearing aids for only a few hours each day and as you begin
to feel more comfortable with them, gradually increase the amount of
time you wear them.
Your brain needs time to adjust to your new way of hearing things –
with time, everything will sound more normal and you won’t even
notice you hearing instrument at all. However, if there is any pain
in your ear, something is most likely wrong – a properly fitted
hearing aid may cause mild soreness for the first few weeks but if this
sensation does not subside or increases in intensity, contact your doctor.
