Digital Hearing Aids
Many modern hearing aids are digital rather than analog.
Digital hearing aids convert sound into numbers using mathematical formulas.
There is no inherent sound quality increase in this process - a digital
device can sound either worse or better than analog one depending on
the quality of both devices.
However, digital hearing aids are much more flexible than their analog
counterparts – due to the small size of the electronics involved
many types of digital signal processing (called DSP) can be fit into
modern hearing aids.
Certain types of signal processing allow digital hearing aids to filter
out noise that may otherwise interfere with audibility, as well as reduce
feedback and adjust to changing situations on the fly.
